Tech support pop-up scams
A warning on your screen says your computer has a virus.
How it works
A pop-up or call says your computer is infected or hacked, often with loud alarms and a phone number. The 'technician' asks to connect to your computer, then claims to fix it and charges you, or gets into your bank account. Some say they're from Microsoft, Apple, or your bank.
What it might look like
"WARNING! Your computer is infected. Do NOT turn it off. Call Microsoft Support now at 1-8XX-XXX-XXXX."
Red flags
- A pop-up tells you to call a phone number.
- They ask to remotely access your computer.
- They ask you to log in to your bank while they watch.
- They want payment by gift card, wire, or crypto.
What to do
- Don't call the number. Close the browser, or restart the computer.
- Never let a stranger connect to your computer.
- If you already let them in, turn off the computer and have someone you trust check it.
- Call your bank if you logged in or paid.
