Medicare and Social Security impostor scams
Someone says they're from Medicare, Social Security, or another government office.
How it works
The caller says your benefits will stop, your Social Security number was 'suspended,' or you need a new Medicare card. They want your Medicare or Social Security number, bank details, or a payment. Caller ID may be faked to show a government name.
What it might look like
"This is Medicare. Your card is expiring. To keep your coverage, please confirm your Medicare number and bank account now."
Red flags
- They threaten arrest or loss of benefits.
- They ask for your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank info.
- They ask for payment by gift card, wire, crypto, or cash.
- They call, text, or email out of the blue.
What to do
- Hang up. Government agencies will not threaten you or demand gift cards.
- Call Medicare yourself at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
- Call Social Security yourself at 1-800-772-1213.
- Never give your numbers to someone who contacted you first.
