Bank and fraud-alert text scams
A text says there's a problem with your bank account.
How it works
A text that looks like it's from your bank asks you to confirm a charge. If you reply, someone calls pretending to be the bank's fraud team. They say your money is at risk and you must move it to a 'safe' account, or read them a code they just sent you.
What it might look like
"BANK ALERT: Did you attempt a $1,250 purchase? Reply YES or NO."
Red flags
- They ask you to move money to 'protect' it.
- They ask for the one-time code texted to you.
- They send a link to 'verify' your account.
- They want you to send money through Zelle or a wire to yourself.
What to do
- Don't reply or click. Call the number on the back of your card.
- Never share a one-time code with anyone.
- Your bank will never ask you to move money to a 'safe' account.
